In summery, a couple things that people didn’t like about this backpack were the straps being uncomfortable, and another person saying it was too small. Another was surprised that the actual bag they received was different than what was shown in the picture. If they had known this ahead of time, they would have bought a different cheaper bag.

After trying the pack on, the consumer noticed that although it fit their torso, along with being able to fit many people whether larger or smaller, they felt that the shoulder straps where at a strange angle and the inside edges bear the backward pressure of the pack into your shoulders too much.

In spite of the uneven strap contact, and no way for adjustments to correct this, they felt that otherwise it was a very affordable pack. In addition, a different reviewer felt that the backpack was a pretty good backpack but ultimately too small. They mentioned that the fit was pretty good after getting it adjusted to their height, but didn’t know if someone over 6 feet tall would be able to find enough adjustments to make it work. Also, they stated that their sleeping bag didn’t fit in the bottom compartment regardless of how forcefully they tried.

In their opinion it just doesn’t hold much gear and were happy that they were only going on a 2 mile hike for a single overnight camping trip. Other ratings given that were middle of the road felt that it was a backpack, not bad and not great. But one thing of mention that one reviewer said, when it is stuffed it will elongate rather than widen so this might cause a balance issue.

There have been far more positive reviews on Amazon then negatives however. One reviewer who is 6’4″ found the backpack to fit snug with the curve of the spine, and also found the straps to have plenty of adjustment length, and it also contains plenty of pockets as well as plenty of exterior points for attaching onto.

The general opinion is that it seems to be a great entry level backpack for hiking and camping. Many felt that it is light and comfortable but might not contain enough storage room for some. It was mentioned a couple times that the sleeping bag compartment is a little too small.

But one reviewer pointed out that after purchasing this pack, they did some shopping around and couldn’t find an equal to this bag for under $200. After packing it with about 40 pounds of gear they felt it was just a great backpack.

There may be an issue with the hydration bladder compartment, but one reviewer used a Platypus-3 liter hydration bladder and it fit perfectly. Make sure you figure out ahead of time what you need on your trip and place them within reach in the pack. In addition, it was mentioned again how much you can attach to the straps of it.

It appears that most are very happy with the Scout 3400 Backpack, and would highly recommend it to others. The seams were referenced as being very sturdy, and some have taken it on multi day hiking journeys and found it to hold up excellent. After sifting through the many reviews, I think it should make a great entry level backpack.
